Anjana Murthy

Anjana was born into a family of music aficionados and was initiated into Carnatic music by her grandmother at the tender age of 5 and later developed a flair for Hindustani style of singing. She has also received training for several years in Bharatnatyam simultaneously. She has trained under various gurus, Pt.Surendra-sa Nakod, Vidushi Smt. Shanta Poti. Presently, she is under the tutelage of Vidushi Smt.Poornima Bhatt Kulkarni and Pt.Ravi Kiran Manipal. Anjana has also received valuable guidance from Dr.Nirmala Balawalli, Shri LN Vijayranga, and Dr. Gopal Raichur. She is an exponent of the Kirana Gharana style of singing with nuances of Agra Gharana. Anjana renders Thumri, Hori, Jhula, Hindi bhajan, Marathi abhaang, Kannada daasarapada,vachana, and Kannada bhava-geethe with equal ease. She also has to her credit a couple of fusion albums and old Hindi classical-based film music albums. She has also composed music and lent her voice to a few rare devotional compositions in Kannada and Hindi.

    Teacher Highlights

    • Anjana has participated at various cultural programs right from her school and college days. She is a recipient of special award from Saamagana Sangeeta Vidhyalaya, special recognition by Shree Shripaadaraja Research International Foundation(R) for composing music and also performing the same.

    • She has a distinction in the Karnataka State Board Senior exam in Hindustani vocal music

    • Gold medalist in her Masters in Hindustani vocal music from Dr.Gangubai Hangal State University for music and performing arts, Mysore. Anjana is a graded artist of the AIR, Bangalore.
